Leonard's life at his new junior high is just barely tolerable until he becomes friends with the unusual Alan and with him shares an extraordinary adventure.

Alan Mendelsohn The Boy from Mars eBook Daniel Pinkwater

What can I say, I am an unashamed giant Daniel Pinkwater fan, and I am generally entertained by everything he writes. I love his use of the unexpected hero, the ordinary guy who turns out to be extraordinary. I love how he takes regular kids and brings them into amazing situations where they learn so much about themselves and entertain the reader so thoroughly in the process.

If you're on the fence, read it. Read this or any other DP book you can - if you haven't been reading his work, you, my friend, are missing out. Every DP book I read leaves me feeling better about the world. Really. This story is no exception.

And yes, I've not told you anything about the story really - two boys. Weird friends. Things that seem to be impossible just might be true. And those two boys just might turn out to be unexpected heroes.

No way I can do it justice. Just do yourself a favor and read his work. You won't be sorry.

Alan Mendelsohn The Boy from Mars eBook Daniel Pinkwater Reviews

This cool little book is out of print and that's too bad. Yeah, the cultural references are dated but the story still stands. I was lucky to find a weeded out copy from a school library. Hope you can also find one.
A classic. Not only is the description of a smart kid in high school spot on, not only are there cool things on every single page, you just have to believe that this is how reality actually is. And by that I mean, of course, multiple planes of existence, the ability to transport between them, and, somewhere, the Green Chili of Death.
One of the funniest books I ever read when growing up. I bought it to read to my daughter, and realized it couldn't be written today -- some of the best bits revolve around smoking, and the attitude towards authority figures is decidedly irreverent. Underneath the gags is a great story about a boy who learns to stop getting pushed around. Along the way, he also learns how to make people rub their stomachs with mind control, eats some insanely spicy chili, and visits alternate realities. "Alan Mendelsohn" is a great read that never talks down to its audience.
I lost track of how many D.M. Pinkwater books a read as a child. Now I love buying them and gifting them.
I love everything written by Daniel Pinkwater.
A great book that details a smart kid's coming to life in the pubesafari that is known as high school. Only this high school is unlike any other you've been too. Multiple dimensions collide and a boy's journey to prepubescent man is beautifully and emotionally rendered by a superb author.
At a suggestion from the end of a book by Cory Doctorow, I picked this book up on a whim. The first chapters are AMAZINGLY accurate descriptions of every nerd's childhood, and identifying with the main character was not a problem. Unfortunately, I kept expecting the main plot to turn into a con artist job, and it never did - if I had just read it without that expectation I would have enjoyed it even more. As it is, this is a wonderful book I'd recommend to anyone with a bit of imagination.
